Get Fit Longview hosts Dog Run, Walk and Wag on November 12
Participants can run or walk with or without a dog to wag.
People and canines are invited to join in the Get Fit Longview 1 Mile and 5K Longview Dog Run, Walk and Wag. The event will take place on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Lear Park.
The 5K event will begin at 9 a.m. The 1-mile event starts at 9:15 a.m. Participants are allowed to join the race with or without a dog. The first 100 participants to arrive will receive a free t-shirt. Cutest dog, best costume, and most unique contests will be held after the run/walk. Door prizes will also be given.

Registration can be done in advance by November 2 or onsite on the day of the event beginning at 8 a.m. Entry fee paid before November 2 is $10 per person. Entry fee paid at the event is $15 per person. There is no entry fee for individuals 10 years old or younger that are accompanied by a paying adult. Register online at Parks.LongviewTexas.gov, in person at the City of Longview Parks and Recreation Office, or by mail to the City of Longview Parks and Recreation Department.
The purpose of the event is to promote health and fitness in the community. According to Paula Martin Jones Recreation Center Manager Jim Franklin, “The City of Longview wants to encourage people and families to make a commitment to live healthy and active lifestyles. That doesn’t always mean going to the gym, it can be something as simple as going for a walk with your dog. We had a great turnout for this event last year, and we hope to see lots of people and their pets again this year.”
Several other organizations also plan to participate in the event including booths for PetCo, the Longview Kennel Club, and more. The Humane Society of Northeast Texas also will be on site during the event conducting microchipping for only $15 as well as providing information about pet adoptions.
Event organizers encourage participants to follow the rules for the event. All dogs must be on a leash at all time. Rabies vaccinations must be current on event day. Female dogs in heat are not allowed to participate. Aggressive and unruly dogs or people will be disqualified by race officials. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Additional rules apply.
