TJC to host UIL state One Act Play qualifiers

“There are only eight schools per conference to survive to the statewide competition,” Crawford said. “We host this public performance to honor these students, directors and schools.”

— Tyler Junior College will host an evening of theater honoring Smith County high school troupes who qualified to compete in the state University Interscholastic League One-Act Play competition.

Set Monday, May 7, in Wise Auditorium on the TJC main campus, the showcase will feature one-act play entries from Van, Chapel Hill, and Robert E. Lee high schools.

Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

At 6 p.m., Van will perform scenes from Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”; with Chapel Hill performing “Enron,” by Lucy Prebble, at 7 p.m., and Robert E. Lee’s “These Shining Lives,” by Melanie Marnich, at 8 p.m.

“These groups have advanced through the University Interscholastic League’s zone, district, area, and regional levels to reach the state competition,” said Dr. David W. Crawford, TJC theater professor. “They will perform their plays during the week of May 21-23 at the 86th annual UIL state competition at The University of Texas at Austin.”

Robert E. Lee High School, making its third appearance in the state 5A competition, will compete against Guyer High School of Denton, Martin High School of Arlington, Austin High School of Austin, Cypress Woods High School, Deer Park High School, Judson High School, and Marshall High School of San Antonio.

In the 3A conference, Chapel Hill High School, making its second appearance, and Van High School, competing at state UIL for the ninth time, will compete against Prosper High School, Athens High School, Salado High School, Rockport-Fulton High School of Rockport, Andrews High School and Seminole High School.

“There are only eight schools per conference to survive to the statewide competition,” Crawford said. “We host this public performance to honor these students, directors and schools.”
