It’s every small business’s dream come true: seeing a mob of people cascading through their door, ready to spend cold, hard cash in support of their enterprise.

That’s exactly what happens during a Cash Mob, and that’s what downtown Tyler organizers hope for with their second Cash Mob, set for Tuesday, 5-7 p.m., at Jakes Tyler at 111 E. Erwin.

“The idea of a Cash Mob is to show our support in a very visible and tangible way for small, locally owned businesses,” said Tyler Main Street Department Leader Beverly Abell. “We are asking the public to come to Jakes on Tuesday with $10-$20 in-hand, ready to spend that cash in support and appreciation of this locally owned business that provides jobs, tax dollars and so much more for this community,” Abell said.

Cash Mobs began in 2011 on the east coast, and the idea quickly spread throughout the nation and around the world. Downtown Tyler held its first Cash Mob, one of the first in Texas, in March. Since then, the Texas Municipal League has reported on Tyler’s Cash Mob program, and Abell has been asked to speak about Cash Mobs in the upcoming Texas Downtown Revitalization Conference in November.

“Cash Mobs are a fun, immediate way of supporting downtown and our locally owned businesses,” Abell said. “We can’t stress enough how important it is for downtown revitalization fans to come out and support our businesses not only for Cash Mob, but every other day of the year as well. These businesses provide crucial employment and services to the community, and they deserve our support and appreciation.”
