A BBQ Christmas in June
I was told our category would start at 1 p.m. and to arrive at about ten till one. I got there at noon.
Remember Christmas time when you were a kid? Around September the JC Penney and Sears catalogs would arrive and you would make your Christmas list. The months of anticipation would build until Christmas morning. Then a mad dash is made to the Christmas tree, presents would be ripped open and then -- its all over. I had this same experience last weekend.
The Rib Judges table at the annual Kim Lake Memorial State Championship BBQ contest, Jefferson. 2012.
I was asked to be a judge at Jefferson's Kim Lake Memorial State Championship BBQ Cook Off. The Cook Off benefit's the local Boys and Girls Club and I was asked to judge the rib category. I love BBQ and I especially love ribs! For weeks I looked forward to this event. I was told our category would start at 1 p.m. and to arrive at about ten till one; I got there at noon.
Finally the chicken category finished up and we were placed at our tables. After a brief explanation from the Head Judge, here came the ribs. Box after box came flying by; smell it, take a bite, score it, clean the palate and here comes another. It was great fun but before I knew it we were finished, just like Christmas. So, not wanting the moment to end, I walked over to the next booth and bought a plate of BBQ!
The Kim Lake Memorial State Championship BBQ is held annually on the first weekend in June. We hope you will join us next year in Historic Jefferson Texas.
