Romantic leads in Opera House production “Guys and Dolls”
Sky Masterson falls in love with Miss Sarah Brown, the leader of a Salvation Army-type mission near Broadway.
JEFFERSON One of the Opera House Theatre Players most sought-after actor/singers, John Meyers, is again playing a starring role in the annual summer musical currently in rehearsal by the thespian group.
Meyers plays Sky Masterson, a high-toned gangster with a yen for a lovely Mission lass played by newcomer Rachel Clifton. Ms. Clifton is originally from St. Louis, MO and has had a great deal of stage experience in high school as well as college. Meyers is originally from Wisconsin and has had many years of training as a singer and actually played the part of Sky Masterson some years ago in that state.
In the story, which was based on the Runesque characters created by famed writer Damon Runyon, Sky Masterson falls in love with Miss Sarah Brown, the leader of a Salvation Army-type mission near Broadway. While she rejects him initially, a quick trip across the waters convinces her that she should slip out of her missionary ways and have a little fun as the two sing and dance their way back to the sidewalks of Broadway and the mission building. Duets such as "I've Never Been In Love Before" and "I'll Know" create a romantic mood while the two began their love-hate relationship.
The musical-comedy opens on July 4 at 7:30 pm in the Russell Building in downtown Jefferson runs through July 7. Tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for children under 12 and are available at Blessings Gift Shop daily or call 903-665-3895 or 903-665-2310.
A special chance ticket is being sold for $1 for two specially made benches with the show logo painted on it and signed by all cast members. The benches were needed as a scene propr and cast member Connie Smith made them and suggested that chances be made to pay for the cost of the materials. The colorful benches may be seen each performance and a drawing will be held on the final night of the production. You do not have to be present to win. Tickets are available at Blessings or from any board member.
