Theatre TJC opens 2012-13 season with ‘Cinderella Waltz’

— Fairy tales can be a delicate, dangerous dance. Just ask Rosey Snow, the protagonist in “Cinderella Waltz,” which kicks off Theatre TJC’s 2012-13 season.

“Cinderella Waltz” is playwright Don Nigro’s frivolous – and PG-rated – retelling of the popular children’s story. The story begins conventionally enough, but soon careens off into darker tones akin to something from the Brothers Grimm, with hints of “King Lear” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Grotesque farce and romantic fantasy blend in this fractured fairy tale for adults.

Performances are set 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 4-6 and 11-13, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Oct. 6, in Jean Browne Theatre located in Wise Cultural Arts on the Tyler Junior College main campus.

Despite its fairy tale name, this isn’t children’s theater. The production contains mature themes and some language that may be inappropriate for kids.
