In 1989, rental of the old Central Elementary School Building provided a place to display and perform art forms. In 1992, the Meredith Foundation of Mineola provided MLOTA with a grant to purchase the building from the school district. Additional grants also provided funds for exterior and interior renovations. Today, the festivities last an entire weekend and feature parades, bands, food, frosty beverages, and of course, beads!

One word of warning, though - up to 25,000 revelers have been known to converge on the City of Jefferson for Mardi Gras, so the bed & breakfasts fill up fast. Many rooms are booked a year in advance, so it's important to make your reservations early.

Meanwhile, cut a slice of King Cake, don your mask, grab a handful of beads,...

IMG_0432_resized.jpgPiney Woods Live was in downtown Edom last Saturday night, where we took in a show at the Old Firehouse Visual Arts Gallery, featuring Chuck E. Costa and two of the three members of Mon Monarch, a Connecticut based folk group.  Coincidentally, one member, guitarist Eric Tate, is from Van, Texas. It was a fantastic show, typical of the type of talent that Jeff is bringing to the Old Firehouse once every month. You can see photos here: http://www.pineywoodslive.com/photos.html .  The bongo player you see in the photos is Eric's younger brother, who sat in with the duo on a few numbers.  A pre-release of the Mon Monarch's first album is available for a voluntary donation at share.monmonarch.com. Chuck has released two solo discs, Where the Songs Come From (2006) and At the Drawing Board...
